This article provides the steps for filing an extension (Form 4868 Automatic Extension of Time to File) for the 1040 return
Some taxpayers may require additional time to gather information and file their 1040 tax return. Filing the Form 4868 will allow an extension through October 15th. This will not excuse them from owing penalties for not filing before the usual tax deadline of April 15th. Please refer to the IRS instructions for filing the Form 4868 here:

The following steps are used to create and electronically file Form 4868:
- Complete the following on the Client Data Screen:
Taxpayer name, address, date of birth, and filing status & bank account data - Click Add Form button.
In the All Forms & Worksheets list, locate Form 4868 and then double click it.
- Enter the EFIN
- Enter PIN numbers for the ERO, Taxpayer, and Spouse (if present).
- If making a payment using electronic funds withdrawal, complete the Debit Account Information.
Check the Transfer Bank data from CDS (Client Data Screen) checkbox to auto fill in the routing number, account number, and account type.
Otherwise, Type the Routing Number, Account Number, Account Type, and Payment Date.

To transmit the Federal Extension
- Click Queue
in the menu bar.
- Clear any Verify errors that are in direct relation to the US EXT Form 4868 (example below)

- The Program will show the "Return Errors and Rejects" window if there are errors on the tax return. Because the tax return is not being sent at this time and only the extension is being sent, most errors (even fatal) can be ignored.
- Clear any Verify errors that are in direct relation to the US EXT Form 4868 (example below)
- To transmit the 4868, despite errors on the 1040 and other related forms, click Next.
- On the "Queue Return For Transmission" window check ONLY the Queue Federal Extension.
- Click Queue to prepare the extension for transmission.

- Transmit to Central Site/Main Office.
